High Altitude Health and Wellness, managed and owned by Dr. Nicole McDermott, provides Roaring Fork Valley residents and visitors efficient, focused, and quality care. Dr. McDermott is specialized in FAA Medical Clearance and HIMS AME services for airmen, air traffic controllers, and flight students which allows for safe air travel from Aspen, Grand Junction, Eagle, Denver, and beyond!

FAA Medical Clearance

Dr. Nicole McDermott is designated to administer Class 1, 2, 3 and ATCS exams by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Dr. McDermott is also a FAA designated HIMS AME.

You must complete form 8500 before your appointment and bring your CONFIRMATION NUMBER with you.

If you have a Special Issuance (SI), please bring all paperwork related to your SI. This includes any letters from the Federal Aviation Administration, medical records from treating physicians, and any recent test results and lab results related to your SI.

If you have a Statement of Demonstrated Ability (SODA), bring all paperwork related to your SODA.

FAA Exam and Consultation Fees

FAA Exam: $325

FAA Exam 18 and under: $250 (Airman under 18 must have a parent/guardian present)

EKG: $70

Consultations, Medical Record Review & HIMS: fee determined on an individual basis.

Human Intervention Motivational Study

A HIMS AME is an FAA designated Senior Airman Medical Examiner who is trained in evaluating airmen for substance or alcohol related conditions and other mental health conditions.

Although HIMS AMEs usually serve airline pilots who are in recovery as part of the HIMS (Human Intervention Motivational Study) program, the FAA may require any pilot to consult with a HIMS AME for special issuance medical certification consideration for other mental health conditions.

HIMS AME fee is to be determined on an individual basis.

Dr. Nicole McDermott, MD

Dr. Nicole McDermott graduated from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, completed an internal medicine internship at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, CO, and graduated from the anesthesiology residency program at the University of Colorado before practicing anesthesia in Denver, CO. In 2008, Nicole and her husband, Dr. Robert McDermott, and their children moved to the Roaring Fork Valley. Nicole practiced anesthesiology at Valley View Hospital for 12 years until in 2019. After being approached by some local airman, she became an Aviation Medical Examiner in order to support the airman, air traffic controllers, and students in the area. She is excited to assist airmen complete their medical exam requirements conveniently in the valley.
